Adult Candy: Brussels Sprouts and Goat Cheese

LittlestMartha Brussels Sprouts with Goat Cheese

Brussels sprouts and goat cheese. I mean can I get more grown up than this?  Hmm, maybe I should review my finances and start thinking about taxes.  Ew.

How To Make Caramelized Brussels Sprouts and Goat Cheese

The original recipe came from epicurious.com  but I did make some modifications.  I think you’ll like the changes.

You’ll Need:

What To Do:

Brussels Sprouts clean up

  1. Cut the bottoms of the brussels sprouts and discard the outer leaves. If you compost, this is a great example of “green” to put in your composter.
  2. Slice the brussels sprouts in half.
  3. Take the shallots and cut them into quarters.
  4. After the oil has been warmed, place the shallots in the skillet. Try not to move them around in the pan too much so they get that caramelized color and flavor.
  5. Remove the shallots and put them aside.
  6. Add a little more oil, if needed. Then put the brussels sprouts face down.
  7. After a couple of minutes and the brussels sprouts have caramelized take your tongs and allow them to cook on the other side.
  8. Add the shallots back in, season with salt, water and honey.
  9. Place the brussels sprouts in your fancy adult bowl and sprinkle the pepitas and goat cheese.
  10. Eat and feel all good and growned up.

Now that the dishes are done, I’m fantasizing about how one day those brussels sprouts and shallots will come from my garden. We are making some headway on that front but it’s all about patience now. Oh, and we should probably plant something.  Meh. Details.

Star Wars Cube Decorations And How To Do It Yourself

May The Force Be In Your Cube

It’s someone’s birthday and they happen to be a fan of Star Wars. A big fan. What do you do? If you want to go overboard you can create the famous Death Star battle at Yavin with some low-budget items. All right, Gold Leader, let’s take stock of what we need to create.

The Death Star

Death Star Cubicle

To create the Death Star, you may want to try papier-mâché over a balloon which you can then paint elephant gray and paint black squares on to it. As you can probably guess given my word choice and my track record, I did not make the fully operational battle station out of papier-mâché. Instead I used a styrofoam ball that would not take on paint without a nice lathering of wood putty. Why wood putty? It was available.

Can’t you see the resemblance? Sorta?

X-Wing Fighters

Made completely out of office supplies this was the most fun and fitting Star Wars fighter jet.  A step by step assembly is provided by Instructables.com. I did make a couple of modifications. This time, for the better.  Per the Instructables instructions, you will need a memory card to mount the binder clips which will become the wings. Instead of wasting a memory card, cut out a piece of cardboard. Then when all is assembled spray paint it gray. When that has dried, apply some red acrylic paint on the side of the sharpie for the  characteristic red stripe.

Lightsabers

These lightsabers are easy to make, cheap and fun to whack others with.  Take a pool noodle and cut it in half with scissors. With silver and black duct tape you can make the handles.  Any nerfherder can make one.

Admiral Ackbar’s Snack Bar

After any battle, warriors tend to get a might hungry.  And we’re not talking about blue milk. Rather it would do better to have some Thermal Detonators (whoppers), Han’s Rollos (rollo minis), Qui-Gon Jinn-Ger Snaps (ginger snaps), Princess Leia honey buns (honey buns). The idea originally came from Hello My Sweet and she even sells these decorations on her Etsy store.

Star Wars Paper Dolls

The proverbial icing, in my opinion, to any decoration is to find the personal touch. In this instance, a friend and I cut out the famous characters and superimposed the heads of our team so it would appear as though we are traveling in the  Millennium Falcon, which I was lucky to find at a garage sale.
